Kjeldalselva Power Plant Is in Operation
The power plant utilizes a head of 233 meters from the intake high up in the Kjeldalselva River down to the power station. This provides an estimated average annual production of 12.7 GWh from a Pelton turbine with an output of 5.1 MW. The waterway consists of an 826-meter water-filled tunnel and a 446-meter pressure pipe.
It has been a long process from the granting of the concession until the power plant was finally completed. The power plant was granted a concession by NVE in 2009, with construction starting in autumn 2018. The intake is located in steep and rugged terrain high up in Kjeldalen. There is no road up, so equipment has been flown in and personnel have had to travel on foot or by skis and snowshoes, a little under an hour of leisurely walking from the power station.
The power plant is now complete, with minimal visible impact on the landscape. However, it can be seen from European Route 6 when driving past Hatteng, the municipal center of Storfjord, at the head of the Lyngenfjord.
